About the City
Nizhny Novgorod is about 400 km east of Moscow. It is located at the confluence of the Oka and the Volga rivers and enjoys an advantageous geographical position providing travelers with rich and memorable experiences. Being the capital of Privolzhsky Federal District of Russia, Nizhny Novgorod is the industrial, scientific and cultural center of the region.
Founded in 1221 as an outpost of Moscow rule, Nizhny Novgorod played a significant role in Russia’s history. In 1612 the city gathered a people’s army, headed by citizen Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky, which confronted the Polish intervention and liberated Moscow. In 1817 the city became a great Russian trade center as the All-Russian Exhibition was first organized. Since then and until 1917 the city was nicknamed “Russia’s Pocket” meaning that all the wealth of the country was focused in Nizhny Novgorod. From 1932 to 1990 the city bore the name of a world-famous Russian writer Maxim Gorky who was born in Nizhny Novgorod and spent years growing up there. During the Soviet period the city turned into an important industrial center with automotive, ship-building, iron and steel, chemical, machine-building and other industries providing high-volume output of products demanded across the country and the world.
In 1990 the city revived its historical name. Today Nizhny Novgorod is a modern metropolitan area with a developed infrastructure welcoming travelers who want to get the feel of Russia.
